S -Uraat

Purines (adenine and guanine) are chemical ingredients needed to form DNA. Their disintegration creates uric acid or urate (S-Uraat) which is removed from the system through the kidneys in urine. If the body is unable to remove surplus urate, it starts accumulating in the system.

In gout, uric acid crystallises and deposits in the joints. The higher the urate value, the more likely the uric acid is to crystallise. However, no clear threshold value for exposure to gout has been set.

It is normal to consume purines as part of food, but they can also be consumed in excess. Purines are particularly found in meat, entrails, beer, fish, poultry skin, yeast products and game.

When should urate be tested?
  • Joint pain and swelling in the lower limbs, particularly in the big toe
  • Redness, hotness, sensitivity around the joints
  • Use of alcohol
  • High blood fat levels
  • Excess weight
What does a urate test measure?

The test measures the urate concentration in the blood. The test is used in connection with gout and pre-eclampsia.

Normally, the result is:

Reference values:

  • Women aged < 50: 155 - 350 umol/l
  • Women aged ≥ 50: 155 - 400 umol/l
  • Men: 230 - 480 umol/l

Please contact your physician or other healthcare professional if you suspect an illness or need help interpreting the results.

Read more about defining reference values.

The blood’s urate levels may increase in the following situations:

  • Metabolic dysfunction
  • Gout
  • Pre-eclampsia
  • Renal dysfunction
  • Quick increase (leukaemia) or destruction (cytostatic treatment or radiotherapy) of cells
  • Use of alcohol
  • Excess weight
  • Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
  • Hypercalcemia or excess calcium concentration in the blood
  • Use of certain diuretics

Low urate values occur, for example, in the following situations:

  • Liver damage
  • Colitis ulcerosa
  • Reduced urate formation
  • CRP (8022 S -hsCRP)
