The fat-soluble vitamin E is an antioxidant that prevents the fatty acids in our cells from oxidising, in other words breaking down. Vitamin E is bound in fats and absorbed into blood in the intestines. More than half of the vitamin E we ingest is absorbed into the system from the digestive tract. The heart, muscles, lungs, liver and adrenal glands contain large quantities of vitamin E.

Vitamin E is present in colourful vegetables and fruit as well as vegetable oils, wholegrain, wheatgerm, soft vegetable margarine, nuts and seeds. We also ingest it in eggs, cheese, beef, pork and certain types of fish.

When should vitamin E levels be measured?

Vitamin E levels are measured when suspecting vitamin E deficiency or overdose. Vitamin E deficiency is a rare condition which is usually related to malabsorption, for example, if the intestines are not functioning normally. Insufficient ingestion of vitamin E is very rare. Vitamin E deficiency may result in nerve damage.

What does a vitamin E test measure?

The test measures the amount of vitamin E in the blood.

Normally, the result is:

Reference values:

  • Adults: 12–42 µmol/l
  • The vitamin E levels of children and young people (those under the age of 19) are lower than those of adults.

Please contact your physician or other healthcare professional if you suspect an illness or need help interpreting the results.

The reference values of this examination have changed 11.10.2021. You will find your own result's reference values from My LOUNA in touch with the graph. Read more about defining reference values.

Clearly elevated vitamin E levels are present in hereditary fat metabolism disorder, in other words familial hypercholesterolemia.

Decreased vitamin E values occur in malabsorption of fatty acids, haemolytic anaemia in children or long-term treatment with synthetic nutrition.
